Surveillance video shows the shocking moment a New Jersey woman plunges head-first down open basement stairs in downtown Plainfield.
The unidentified 67-year-old woman sustained serious injuries as she flipped over an open metal access door on the sidewalk leading to the basement of an ACME Windows shop Thursday, authorities said. She fell about 6 feet down the stairs, New York’s NBC Channel 4 reported.
Paramedics and a fire crew lifted her from the basement and took her in an ambulance to a local hospital, where doctors listed her as being in a serious condition Thursday night.
Plainfield police and witnesses said it appeared that she was distracted by her phone, but her son told CBS2 that she’s visually impaired and diabetic. He said the video was painful to watch and that he’s grateful his mother wasn’t killed in the incident.
“She regularly takes on schedule her meals and checks her sugar,” he told the broadcaster. “As far as I was told, when she was walking down the street, she felt a little nauseous in a sense, and looked at her phone to see what time it was,” he told the news outlet.
